Whether you are an architect, designer, artist, performer, filmmaker, media engineer or creative scholar, the Herberger Institute is a place to dream. But unlike the misrepresentation of the artist and scholar as lost in a cloud, our faculty and students "make stuff happen" and leave their well-chiseled mark on the world. Come tour our concert and performance halls, design and art studios, exhibition spaces, dance studios, scene shops, classrooms, clinics and digital culture labs, and you will see the power of dreamers and doers. The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts has a number of extraordinary facilities furnished with state-of-the-art equipment. Located primarily in the northwest corner of campus, the institute facilities make up the university's "design and arts district," and are adjacent to downtown Tempe. In addition to our Tempe spaces, the Herberger Institute also has programs at the Media and Immersive eXperience Center in Mesa, Fusion on First in Phoenix and the ASU California Center Broadway and Grand locations in Los Angeles.

Across nearly 40 years of design innovation, he has collaborated with leading brands, companies, organizations, heads of state, entrepreneurs, renowned artists and fellow optimists to create positive change and strategic impact across a broad spectrum of projects. Every one of our more than 5,900 students who roam the ASU design studios, performance halls, theaters, dance studios, galleries and classrooms are a key component in making the Herberger Institute community strong and vibrant. The Herberger Institute offers more than 45 undergraduate degrees and concentrations and more than 70 graduate degrees and concentrations in our five schools Art, Arts, Media + Engineering, Design, Film, Dance and Theatre and Music. The Herberger Institute Creative Economy Hub LA connects students to one of the world’s most important centers of cultural and creative industries, allowing the Herberger Institute to meet the needs of students while also contributing to the communities and industry in California. These connections boost the Herberger Institute’s efforts to ensure that all students and alumni, regardless of social background, have an equal chance to help tell our nation’s — and our world’s — stories.
Spaces and faculty
The intended audience is Herberger Institute students, but we are welcoming partners outside of ASU to use the modules to support community-engaged learning. The modules are currently hosted on Canvas, which is Arizona State University’s online learning platform. ASU and the Herberger Institute are building a dream team of expert faculty to train the creative workforce of the future and building facilities that will allow graduates to take advantage of open positions in emerging technology.

The graphic design program joined the school in June 1996, moving from the ASU School of Art. The School of Planning was formerly the School of Planning and Landscape Architecture. In July 2004, the landscape architecture program moved to the School of Architecture. ASU Art Museum in the Herberger Institute harnesses the university’s breadth and depth of expertise to pioneer new models for arts learning, engagement and innovation that integrates relevancy, trust and resilient communities with museum institutions. If you are interested in our Tempe campus degrees, we recommend attending a Tempe Monday or Friday program. The Design School is offering a new interdisciplinary undergraduate design degree in Los Angeles with opportunities to explore visual narratives, product design, environmental graphics and design leadership.
These 15-minute individual appointments are for high school and transfer students or families who have a quick question about the undergraduate admission process and degree programs that are offered by the ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. To position designers, artists, scholars and educators at the center of public life and prepare them to use their creative capacities to advance culture, build community and imaginatively address today’s most pressing challenges. ASU FIDM in the Herberger Institute is designed to prepare the next generation of fashion students.
Institute Professors work across the institute on a number of different initiatives and programs, with the goal of promoting cross-disciplinary progress as well as trans domain activities with the university community and across the city and state. They demonstrate new ways for artists, designers and students to thrive on campuses through a spirit of enterprise, discovery, innovation and change. The Herberger Institute is shaping the future creative workforce, offering transdisciplinary degrees in XRts at world-class facilities in Arizona and California. The Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center in Mesa, Arizona, is powered by cutting-edge technology—a hub for collaboration among creators, researchers and worldbuilders, and the ASU California Center Broadway in downtown Los Angeles was custom-designed for emerging technology curriculum. Students and XRts fellows collaborate and create with faculty who are experts in XR, VR, immersive media, experience design and more. Rodriguez Vega has contributed valuable research to the local arts and academic communities during her graduate (MS and PhD) studies.

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts invites all prospective students to take tours of selected facilities. Our tour date and time options follow the undergraduate admissions Experience ASU schedule and are either before or after the Experience ASU programming, excluding national holidays. If there are no available in-person tours that fit your schedule, we invite you to explore our virtual tours. The XRts Immersive Media Fellowship supports diverse artists, technologists and designers to drive social change through immersive experiences. From music, dance and theatre productions to visiting artists performances and lectures, from student design and art exhibitions to digital cultural and film showcases, ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts offers a rich selection of events. Experience ASU visits are sessions with ASU Enrollment team members, followed by a Herberger Institute academic information session with Herberger Institute enrollment team members.

MacArthur Fellows Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera are leading a lab for Latino filmmaking and representation in film. A global worldbuilding contest where you imagine the immersive world you want to see and compete for the chance to build it and for an XRts graduate degree scholarship. Most recently, Rodriguez Vega has worked on a project focused on collaborative design with the Center for the Future, an ASU-Starbucks partnership.
For graduate students interested in an individualized institute-wide interdisciplinary degree that integrates graduate courses and faculty research expertise, see the doctor of philosophy in design, environment and the arts. Our distinguished research unit, the ASU Art Museum, supplements our academic areas. As part of a weekly installation on campus, a Herberger Institute student once hand-lettered "Here's to the dreamers and the doers" in chalk on an outdoor blackboard on the ASU campus.
During her studies in the MS media arts and sciences program, she collaborated with the SANDS (Social and Digital Systems Group) research lab. This led to her finishing her MS with a publication that was published at the 2019 Designing Interactive Systems conference. This experience prepared her for the world of dissertation and defense that is typical within the realms of PhD studies. Mau practices a life-centered design approach to help his clients envision and articulate their purpose and future.
